One Improvement a Day, One Step Closer to Excellence
By Sunil Jain, Group CFO
Small steps, big impact.
In our fast-changing world, standing still isn’t an option. Markets evolve, customer expectations rise, technology advances, and competition gets stronger every day. For a group like ours– operating across Africa in trading, manufacturing, healthcare, printing, packaging, distribution, and education–our ability to keep improving is what will keep us ahead.
Continuous improvement isn’t about big changes overnight. It’s a simple but powerful habit: finding at least one thing every day that we can do better than we did yesterday.
The Power of Small Improvements
Many of the world’s most successful organisations have built their success through a culture of continuous improvement. They understand that excellence comes not from one big breakthrough, but from thousands of small improvements made consistently over time.
– Imagine if every employee improved just one small thing every day:
– A production team member reduces material wastage by improving a process.
– A warehouse employee finds a better way to organise inventory.
– A sales executive identifies a smarter way to serve customers.
– A finance colleague simplifies a report or improves its accuracy.
– A procurement team member finds a better supplier solution.
– A manager improves communication within the team.
One improvement a day may seem small, but over a year it adds up to 365 improvements. Multiplied across thousands of employees, the impact becomes transformational.
Avoiding the “Just Another Day” Mindset
A day spent simply repeating yesterday’s actions–without questioning, learning, or improving–is a missed opportunity. That mindset leads to complacency instead of curiosity, repetition instead of innovation, old habits instead of better ways, and accepting problems instead of solving them. Every day should bring a small sense of achievement.
Every day gives us a chance to ask:
– Can I do this faster?
– Can I do this more efficiently?
– Can I reduce errors?
– Can I improve quality?
– Can I make life easier for my colleagues or customers?
– Can I eliminate unnecessary steps?
The goal isn’t to criticise what we’re doing today, it’s to challenge ourselves to make tomorrow better.
Improvement Is Everyone’s Responsibility
Continuous improvement isn’t only senior management’s job, it belongs to everyone. The person closest to the work often has the best ideas, because they understand the challenges first-hand. A machine operator, a salesperson, an accountant, a driver, or an administrative colleague can all spot opportunities others might miss.
A culture of improvement begins when every employee believes: “I have the power to make something better.”
Small Improvements, Big Results
Our ambition as a group is to grow, expand, and create long-term value. That means staying an organisation that’s always learning, adapting, and improving. Growth doesn’t come only from bigger investments, new markets, or new products–it also comes from improving the way we work, every day.
Let’s make continuous improvement part of our daily routine. Before ending each day, ask yourself: “What’s the one thing I improved today?” Because when everyone improves something every day, we don’t just create better processes–we create a better organisation.
One day. One improvement. One step closer to excellence.
